Is there anything better than some kind of apple bake in the fall? I know I’ve said this before, but fall baking is my favorite because of all of the warm and cozy ingredients (apples, cinnamon, caramel, pumpkin….).
I think I ran across this recipe on Instagram and the caramel apple part immediately caught my attention. It’s pretty easy, you start by tossing sliced apples in a brown sugar-cinnamon mixture, which already smells amazing before it even hits the oven. I used the suggested caramel sauce over the top, and it melted right into the apples while baking, creating that sticky, gooey layer underneath. It definitely felt very “fallish,” like something you’d serve after a day at the pumpkin patch (note the cute little pumpkin we got at the pumpkin patch a week or two before I made this).
The topping is classic crumble: flour, brown sugar, butter. You mix it up with your hands until you get those nice big clumps. Sprinkle that evenly over the apples and caramel, pop the whole thing in the oven (on a baking sheet just in case it bubbles up).
Mine took about 30 minutes. The edges were bubbling like crazy and the top was lightly golden, which is exactly what you want. I let it cool about 25 minutes so the juices could settle a bit before serving it up warm with vanilla ice cream and an extra drizzle of caramel sauce on top. Absolutely amazing.
This is the kind of dessert that feels like a warm sweater and made me so excited it’s fall! This recipe will definitely be a staple around our house going forward!
