Streusel-Topped Mincemeat Pie

Last year I ran across a jar of mincemeat at the grocery store and on a whim I threw it in my cart. I’ll be honest, mincemeat sounds gross but it’s very British and I wanted to at least try it. I had another recipe I was going use, but then saw the recipe for a streusel-topped mincemeat pie on the jar of mincemeat, so I decided to use it.

This probably shouldn’t even count as baking because it’s so easy. I literally opened the jar of mincemeat, poured it onto a pre-made pastry round, then mixed together the streusel. I liked this used oatmeal in the streusel as I don’t think I’ve ever made one using it before so that was different. I had some chopped walnuts in the pantry leftover from another recent baking adventure so I used it. Plus, I felt like it would go well with the raisin/apple mincemeat. Then I put the pie on a baking tray (in case it spills over) and baked it.

As I mentioned, this is a super easy recipe. It doesn’t take long and looks pretty good. Taste-wise is another story…. I know there are many people who enjoy this but my family (who asked as taste-testers) and I are not those people. This is going to sound stupid, but when I bought the jar of mincemeat I missed that it had beef in it so I actually didn’t realize that was in there until we tried it. It has a very unique flavor and texture that I’m sure some people grew up eating and/or love. While I am glad I tried this I won’t be making this again.
