12 Days of Christmas Baking Day 5: Melomakarona

Five days in and I’ll be honest, I’m having a lot of fun trying various Christmas and New Year’s treats from around the world. While I was researching what I’d be baking during these 12 days I found a lot of amazing recipes and it was really hard to consolidate to just 12 but these fun cookies made the final cut.

I found a lot of great holiday recipes on The Spruce Eats website but I did want to vary up who I was using. I like that they give a little background information on the item before giving the recipe and it was super easy to follow up thanks to the photos and directions. This recipe isn’t hard, just a little time intensive (though of course not nearly as much as the breads from a few days ago).

If you’ve got everything prepped before starting that’s ideal and I messed up by not starting the syrup mixture while the cookies were in the oven as I got a bit sidetracked around the house. Thankfully the cookies were still quite warm when I put them into the syrup so I don’t think it was an issue. The only change I had to make here was I used orange rind rather than lemon as I used all of those up when making Stollen with my failed candied fruit peel experiment from a few days ago.

The cookies smell so good and look so pretty plated! They yield a wonderful orange and honey flavor and weren’t overly sweet which was nice. Definitely a fun and easy bake that I’ll try again!
